When the freeways gridlock and the corporate office towers go dark, Los Angeles undergoes an extraordinary nocturnal transformation. For two decades, grassroots cycling collectives like Midnight Ridazz and the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR LA) have mobilized thousands of riders beneath the streetlights, reclaiming asphalt arteries from automotive supremacy through radical joy, pedal power, and unapologetic community.

The Origins: Reclaiming the Car Capital of the World

Founded in 2004 by Don Ward (widely known as Roadblock) and a tight-knit circle of nocturnal cyclists, Midnight Ridazz began as an organic pushback against the isolation of LA’s car culture. Meeting on the second Friday of each month, the ride quickly exploded from a dozen friends into thousands of riders navigating 20-mile routes through Grand Park, the 6th Street Viaduct, Chinatown alleyways, and the concrete banks of the Los Angeles River.

Equipped with massive portable sound systems towed on bicycle trailers, glowing neon rim lights, and brass horns, the ride transforms empty urban canyons into rolling mobile celebrations.

World Naked Bike Ride LA: Radical Vulnerability & Protest

Every summer, the Los Angeles chapter of the World Naked Bike Ride takes this ethos a step further. Grounded in the global motto “As Bare As You Dare,” WNBR LA operates at the intersection of environmental protest, oil dependency awareness, and radical body positivity.

Riders gather at central transit hubs like Hollywood & Western or MacArthur Park, decorating their bodies with glow paint, glitter, and protest slogans before riding in a peaceful, protected mass through Koreatown and Downtown LA. The nudity is purposeful: it directly visualizes the extreme physical vulnerability of human cyclists sharing multi-lane streets with multi-ton motor vehicles.

Ride Ground Rules & Rider Logistics

• No Drop & Pack Integrity: Rides maintain a conversational cruising pace (10–12 mph) so riders of all skill levels can stay together.
• Corking & Safety: Designated volunteer riders “cork” side intersections during green lights to prevent pack division and ensure rider safety.
• Leave No Trace: Riders are strictly expected to pack out all trash, respect neighborhoods, and help fellow cyclists with roadside flat tires.
• Transit Accessible: Meeting points and end locations are deliberately routed near Metro Rail stations (B Line, A Line, E Line) for safe late-night returns.
